Titanium, noble and modern metal

Le titanium est un métal très prisé en raison de ses propriétés exceptionnelles. Il est utilisé dans divers domaines tels que l'aérospatial, l'automobile, la médecine et bien d'autres encore.

The advantages of titanium

Titanium is appreciated for its strength, low weight and corrosion resistance.

Compared to other metals such as steel or aluminium, titanium has a higher mechanical strength and can withstand high stresses without deforming. This makes it an ideal choice for applications requiring robust materials and durable.

The low weight of titanium is also a major asset. Indeed, it is about 40% lighter than stainless steel and twice as light as aluminum. This lightness helps to reduce the weight of structures and components, which is particularly useful in sectors such as aerospace and automotive where weight reduction contributes significantly to improved performance and energy efficiency.

The corrosion resistance of titanium is another key factor. Titanium is virtually immune to salt water corrosion, making it an excellent material for underwater or marine applications. In addition, titanium is also resistant to corrosion by a wide range of acids, gases and chemical solutions.

Other advantages of titanium

In addition to its strength, lightness and corrosion resistance, titanium has other advantages such as its biocompatibility and its ability to withstand high temperatures:

The biocompatibility of titanium is particularly interesting in the medical field, where it is used for dental implants, orthopaedic prostheses and surgical instruments.

Titanium can also withstand very high temperatures without losing its mechanical properties. This makes it ideal for applications that require thermal resistance, such as jet engines or high-performance braking systems.

The different types of titanium

There are several types of titanium, called "grades", which are classified according to their chemical composition and mechanical characteristics. Some examples of the most commonly used grades of titanium are:

Grade 1 (T35) - Titane pur

Grade 1 is the purest form of titanium and has the highest ductility and corrosion resistance.
This grade is often used in medical and chemical applications as well as in the food industry due to its non-toxicity and biocompatibility.

Grade 2 (T40) - Titane non allié

The grade 2 is slightly more resistant than grade 1 but retains excellent ductility and corrosion resistance. It is used for applications such as aerospace structures, marine equipment or industrial piping.

Grade 5 (TA6V) - Titane allié

The grade 5 is the most commonly used type of titanium in industry due to its exceptional combination of strength, light and corrosion. This grade is a titanium alloy containing 6% aluminum and 4% vanadium, which gives it superior mechanical strength to other grades while maintaining excellent corrosion resistance. Grade 5 is often used in aerospace, automotive, medical implants and high-performance sports.
